Step beyond the postcards and discover the Rome of emperors, gladiators, senators and ordinary people.
Imagine standing where Julius Caesar once walked, looking down upon the temples that witnessed the rise and fall of an empire, and entering the arena where thousands of spectators once gathered to watch gladiators fight for their lives.
This is not simply a visit to ancient monuments. It is a journey into the heart of Ancient Rome.
Together, we will explore the extraordinary archaeological heart of the city with a private local guide who will bring the ruins back to life through stories, anecdotes and historical characters.
The Colosseum — Rome’s most iconic monument
We begin with the Colosseum, the greatest amphitheatre of the ancient world.
As we walk through its monumental arches, we will imagine the crowds arriving for the games, the gladiators preparing for combat and the spectacular shows staged for the Roman people.
But behind the famous façade there is much more to discover: How was the Colosseum built? Who paid for it? What really happened inside the arena? And what was life like for the people sitting in the stands?
I will reveal the stories that make the monument come alive.
The Roman Forum — where history was made
From the Colosseum we enter the Roman Forum, the political, religious and social centre of Ancient Rome.
Here, surrounded by temples, basilicas and triumphal arches, we will walk along the same ancient streets once used by emperors, senators, merchants and ordinary citizens.
We will discover the places associated with Julius Caesar, Augustus, Cicero and the emperors of Rome, while learning how a small settlement on the Tiber became the centre of one of the greatest civilizations in history.
Standing among these ruins, it is easy to forget that they were once the beating heart of a city of more than a million people.
Palatine Hill — the birthplace of imperial Rome
We then climb the Palatine Hill, traditionally considered the birthplace of Rome.
According to legend, this is where Romulus founded the city after defeating his brother Remus.
But the Palatine is also where Rome’s emperors chose to live.
From the remains of the imperial palaces, we will enjoy one of the most spectacular views over the Roman Forum and the Circus Maximus while discovering how the emperors transformed this hill into an extraordinary complex of palaces, gardens and terraces.
More than ruins: the human story of Rome
What makes this experience different is that we will not simply walk from monument to monument.
We will try to imagine the people who lived here.
What did a Roman citizen see when he entered the Forum?
What did a gladiator feel before entering the arena?
How did an emperor experience absolute power?
What happened to Rome when the empire began to decline?
And how did these magnificent ruins survive to become the Rome we see today?
These are the stories that transform an archaeological site into a living city.
